My Plants

Perhaps the most obvious of my agricultural passions, my love for collecting rare and tropical plants has influenced my knowledge of horticultural practices and routines. House plants were introduced to me my sophomore year of high school. I soon became obsessed with them and amassed a collection too large to count. It was through my intense, passion-filled research and close watch of my collection that I slowly became familiar with the unique methods plants had for survival, reproduction, and growth. I became utterly enamored with caring for aroids, sacrificing my living space for my ever-growing number of plants. My acute attentiveness for my house plants allowed me to use my applied knowledge in my academic and professional horticultural practices. Pictured below are a small number of the aroids that I have grown.

One of the most noticeable ways keeping plants has helped me to establish pre-existing horticultural knowledge is my experience in growing plants from seed or seedlings. Doing so has allowed me to meticulously configure the perfect environmental conditions that effect seed growth both negatively and positively. Some of these include soil pH, humidity and moisture level, soil density, and lighting requirements; all valuable knowledge to be applied in professional agricultural settings.

Though I mainly care for aroids and other tropical plants, growing them has instilled an appreciation for the local flora around me and a passion for understanding and protecting it. Involving myself in the plant-trade has also enlightened me to the environmental effects of aesthetic horticultural practices and implanted a dedication for conservation within me. Poaching endangered species, releasing microplastics into the soil via crop fields, and use of synthetic or chemical fertilizers are all professional and unprofessional customs in the field of horticulture. These environmentally harmful practices would not have been introduced to me were it not for my research in caring for house plants, information that now drives a deep-rooted passion of mine. Conservation is a profession that I have taken interest in for most of my life, and my plant collection has only helped to drive me towards my goals and passion for the environment.

The impact of my plant collection goes far beyond professional and academic leverage. Watching my plants grow and change into beautiful, mature specimens is perhaps some of my most rewarding achievements in life. I feel a sense of pride when observing my plants; knowing the time, brain power, and failed attempts it took to have the collection I do today brings a blissful peace to my life. Continuing to grow and expand my number of plants is a passion that I do not foresee coming to a swift end, and I hope to continue to spread my knowledge by sharing my plants and their growth.
